The Thorny Pig

The name ‘porcupine’ comes from French ‘porc d’C)pine’ meaning ‘thorny pig’. Something to do with their rounded bodies covered in quills. There are, in total, 27 species of porcupine in the world, of which we at JAWAI regularly encounter one – the Indian Crested Porcupine. Read More The Thorny Pig »

Diwali in Tiger Country

The day started with a feeling of celebration in the air. All the staff were exceptionally chirpy and every corner you turned you were wished “Shub Diwali” (Happy Diwali). Sweets were a main feature of the day with staff recieving vast boxes of Mithai (a selection of confectionary and desserts) and everyone who came through the gates was greeted with Sohan Papri, a crisp and flaky textured sweet. Tiger! Tiger! A New Season at Sher Bagh, Ranthambhore

As the temperatures slowly start to drop, so approaches the opening of the new Tiger Season in India. We at SUJAN’s Sher Bagh are delighted to announce that we will be opening our doors for the 15th year. During the closed period we have done some refurbishment’s and changes which we know you will love. For now, however, let us focus on the tigers. It is estimated that this season there are over 50 tigers in Ranthambhore National Park, and statistically speaking Ranthambhore must be one of the best parks in the world to see a wild Tiger. Our guides are experienced, professional and enthusiastic – we can promise that they will go all out to give you the best possible chance to see the biggest cat on earth. If that were not enough to convince you then maybe the fact that this season there are currently at least 8 cubs in Ranthambhore. Whilst we know that nothing in nature can be planned, this season, the chances of seeing a tiger cub are as good as ever! Read More Tiger! Tiger! A New Season at Sher Bagh, Ranthambhore »

The Delhi of Old

It’s not everyones cup of tea, but I like to sometimes play with black and white. After yet another weekend of exploring Old Dehli I got back home and downloaded the pictures. I was playing around a bit in photoshop and liked the style created in converting to Black and White and then overexposing followed by crushing the blacks. For a number of the pictures I then added some noise (grain) to the picture for that little something different. For me the textures, energy, noise, energy and feel of Old Dehli is quite effectively portrayed in this very simple post- processing. Read More The Delhi of Old »

JAWAI – taking guiding to the next level

At JAWAI we aim to give you, the guest, the best guided experience in India. And we mean it. As a team we are continually looking for ways to improve ourselves, test ourselves and grow. We have assembled a team of partly Indian, partly South African naturalists who will strive to change the face of guiding as you know it. One of the best aspects of JAWAI is that it allows us the flexibility to run things at our own times, go for walks and truly come to grips with one of the worlds most dramatic landscapes, unhindered by regulation. The Leopard population is obviously our focus, but we are determined to convey to you the story of culture, history and life in this part of rural India. It is different from anything else and we aim to push the boundaries of the experience. Read More JAWAI – taking guiding to the next level »
